Three ways you can support World Environment Day

To celebrate World Environment Day on 5th June, the team at Specsavers Ópticas Santa Ponça are sharing their top tips to live a greener life.

The popular opticians are also welcoming people into the store to fill up their reusable water bottles from their Cleanwave water filter. Here are easy changes you can make, to support the environment:

Invest in a reusable water bottle

If there’s one change you make on World Environment Day this should be it! Plastic water bottles are hugely wasteful to produce and most of them end up in landfill. It’s easy to stop buying bottled water by simply drinking water from the tap, using a water filter if you need to, and taking a reusable water bottle with you when you’re out and about. Cleanwave sell reusable bottles which help support the charity’s environmental work. They also have a network of refill stations around the island, including in our store, so you’ll always have access to filtered water to top up your reusable bottle.

Stop using plastic bags

Specsavers switched from plastic to paper bags in 2018 to help offer our customers an eco-friendlier option when they purchase glasses, as plastic bags are a big problem for our environment. Millions of plastic bags end up in landfill each year and many end-up in our oceans, killing marine animals and adding to the plastic soup in our seas. Stopping using plastic bags is one easy change to make for World Environment Day. You could purchase a few reusable bags and leave them in the car or in an easy to remember place, so you don’t get caught without. Once you get into the habit it’s easy, will save you money and help the environment.

Recycle

Recycling is very important as waste has a hugely negative impact on the natural environment. By recycling all your waste, you’re reducing the pollution caused by waste and helping to preserve natural resources, as recycling requires much less energy than making products from raw materials. In the store we are committed to recycle all plastic waste which we create and also offer an option for our customers to recycle their glasses. These glasses are donated to people in need via the Lions Club International, so as well as being a way to reduce waste, they can really change someone’s life in the developing world.

You can take your water bottles to the store on Avenida Rei Jaime I 117 to be refilled or drop off unwanted glasses to be recycled between 9.30am and 8pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 1.30pm on Saturday. Find out more about Cleanwave and download the app at www.cleanwave.org or visit www.specsavers.es to browse glasses or find your nearest store.
