Der zweite Jaleo von Sant Climent wurde im August 2026 wegen der großen Hitze vorgezogen. Der Festtag begann früher als geplant, um Pferde und Teilnehmer den hohen Temperaturen nicht zu sehr auszusetzen.
Der Jaleo ist das traditionelle und emotionale Herzstück der Schutzheiligenfeste auf der Baleareninsel Menorca.
Bei diesem jahrhundertealten Ritual, das im Sommer von Juni bis September durch die verschiedenen Dörfer zieht, reiten festlich gekleidete Reiter, Caixers und Cavallers, auf rassigen menorquinischen Pferden direkt in eine dichte Menschenmenge auf dem Marktplatz. Angetrieben von den rhythmischen Klängen einer Live-Blaskapelle bringen die Reiter ihre Pferde dazu, sich auf den Hinterbeinen aufzurichten, zu sogenannten Bots. Die Aufgabe des Publikums ist es, die Brust des Pferdes mit den Händen zu berühren und es so lange wie möglich auf zwei Beinen zu halten. Dies gilt als Zeichen von Mut, Geschicklichkeit und absolutem Vertrauen zwischen Mensch, Tier und Gemeinschaft.

Historie und Besonderheiten der balearischen Reitkunst
Auf den Balearen, besonders auf der Nachbarinsel Menorca, ist Pferdedressur tief verwurzelte Kultur und lebendige Identität. Die Reitkultur reicht zurück bis in das 14. Jahrhundert, als unter König Jaume II. ein Küsten-Verteidigungssystem errichtet wurde. Die Reiter patrouillierten auf dem berühmten Camí de Cavalls, dem „Pferdeweg“, der die Insel umrundet. Aus dieser militärischen Tradition entwickelte sich eine eigene, stolze Pferderasse: das Cavall Menorquí, das Menorquinisches Pferd. Die tiefschwarzen Hengste zeichnen sich durch Kraft, Eleganz und ein außergewöhnlich mutiges und ruhiges Wesen aus.
Die absolute Besonderheit ist die Doma Menorquina, die menorquinische Dressur. Sie unterscheidet sich von der klassischen Dressur durch ganz spezifische Lektionen. Die Zügel werden traditionell nur mit der linken Hand geführt. Die Parade-Disziplin ist der „Bot“: Das Pferd richtet sich auf den Hinterbeinen auf und läuft mehrere Meter weit durch die applaudierende Menge.

- Sant Joan in Ciutadella, Menorca: Das größte, älteste und spektakulärste Fest der Insel findet jährlich am 23. und 24. Juni statt. Es ist von internationalem touristischen Interesse.
- Sant Martí in Es Mercadal: Mitte Juli, am 20. und 21. Juli. Etwas kleiner als Ciutadella, aber intensiv.

To Menorca in August for the Jaleo of Sant Climent
The second Jaleo of Sant Climent was brought forward to August 2026 due to the intense heat. The festivities began earlier than planned so as not to expose the horses and participants to the high temperatures for too long.
The Jaleo is the traditional and emotional centrepiece of the patron saint festivals on the Balearic island of Menorca.
In this centuries-old ritual, which takes place throughout the summer from June to September in various villages, festively dressed riders – known as caixers and cavallers – ride spirited Menorcan horses straight into a dense crowd in the market square. Driven by the rhythmic sounds of a live brass band, the riders make their horses rear up on their hind legs, in what are known as ‘bots’. The audience’s task is to touch the horse’s chest with their hands and keep it standing on two legs for as long as possible. This is seen as a sign of courage, skill and absolute trust between people, animals and the community.

History and distinctive features of Balearic horsemanship
In the Balearic Islands, particularly on the neighbouring island of Menorca, dressage is a deeply rooted part of the culture and a vibrant part of the local identity. The tradition of horsemanship dates back to the 14th century, when a coastal defence system was established under King Jaume II. The riders patrolled the famous Camí de Cavalls, the ‘horse path’, which circles the island. From this military tradition, a distinct and proud breed of horse developed: the Cavall Menorquí, the Menorcan horse. These jet-black stallions are characterised by their strength, elegance and an exceptionally courageous and calm nature.
The most distinctive feature is the Doma Menorquina, or Menorcan dressage. It differs from classical dressage through its very specific movements. Traditionally, the reins are held only in the left hand. The showpiece discipline is the ‘Bot’: the horse rears up on its hind legs and strides several metres through the applauding crowd.
